She was born an orphan but was adopted by a white family when she was only two months. She was raised with her adoptive parents’ two other kids.

In 1984, after completing high school, she enrolled at Brown University, a private university in Rhode Island.
Four years later, in 1988, she graduated with a BA in Psychology. She immediately continued her education, going to the University of Michigan – – Stephen M. Ross School of Business. While there she a part of the Black Business Students Association and a member of Delta Sigma Theta. She graduated with an MBA in Marketing in 1990.
